🔧 TPMS 센서, 왜 배터리만 따로 못 갈까요?

요즘 차량에는 대부분 TPMS가 장착되어 있습니다.

TPMS는 Tire Pressure Monitoring System의 약자로, 말 그대로 타이어 공기압을 실시간으로 감시하는 시스템입니다. 계기판에 공기압 경고등이 들어오거나 각 바퀴의 공기압 수치가 표시되는 것도 이 센서 덕분입니다.

사진처럼 새 센서와 오래 사용한 센서를 비교해보면 외관은 비슷해 보여도 내부 배터리 수명 차이가 큽니다.

TPMS 센서 내부에는 공기압 측정 장치와 무선 송신기가 들어있는데, 이를 작동시키기 위해 리튬 배터리가 내장되어 있습니다. 보통 수명은 5~10년 정도이며 주행거리, 사용 환경, 온도 등에 따라 차이가 발생합니다.

그렇다면 배터리만 교환하면 될 것 같은데 왜 센서 전체를 교체할까요?

이유는 생각보다 단순합니다.

TPMS 센서는 타이어 내부에서 고속 회전과 충격, 온도 변화, 습기 등을 수년간 견뎌야 하기 때문에 완전 밀폐 구조로 제작됩니다. 만약 배터리를 교체할 수 있도록 만들면 방수·방진 성능이 떨어지고 센서 신뢰성도 낮아질 수 있습니다.

또한 배터리 교환 작업 자체도 센서를 분해하고 다시 밀봉해야 하는데, 제조사 입장에서는 센서 전체를 교체하는 것이 품질 관리 측면에서 훨씬 유리합니다.

실제로 TPMS 경고등이 점등되었을 때 공기압 문제로 오해하는 경우가 많지만, 오래된 차량에서는 센서 배터리 수명 종료가 원인인 경우도 적지 않습니다.

타이어 교체 시기가 되었거나 차량 연식이 7~10년 이상 되었다면 TPMS 상태도 함께 점검해 보시는 것을 권장드립니다. 타이어는 새것인데 센서 배터리가 방전되어 다시 탈착 작업을 하게 되는 경우도 종종 있기 때문입니다.

작은 부품 하나지만 운전자의 안전과 직결되는 장치인 만큼 경고등이 들어온다면 단순 초기화만 하기보다 정확한 진단이 필요합니다.

🛞Why Are TPMS Sensors Not Designed with Replaceable Batteries?

TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It continuously monitors tire pressure and sends data wirelessly to the vehicle.

Inside every TPMS sensor is a pressure sensor, transmitter, and a sealed lithium battery. Most sensors last between 5 and 10 years depending on mileage, climate, and driving conditions.

A common question is: Why not replace just the battery?

The answer lies in reliability. TPMS sensors operate inside the tire where they are exposed to constant vibration, centrifugal force, moisture, and extreme temperature changes. To survive these conditions, manufacturers build them as fully sealed units.

A replaceable battery design would compromise the sensor’s waterproofing and long-term durability. From a manufacturing and safety perspective, replacing the entire sensor is often more reliable than opening and resealing it.

When a TPMS warning appears on an older vehicle, the cause is not always low tire pressure. In many cases, the internal battery has simply reached the end of its service life.

If your vehicle is around 7 to 10 years old and you’re already replacing tires, checking the TPMS sensors at the same time can save additional labor costs later.
