Mercedes-Benz M274 Engine: 3 Common Failures and Their Related DTCs

The Mercedes-Benz M274 is a widely used 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine found in many C-Class, E-Class, GLC, GLE, and other models. While it is generally a reliable engine, several components are known to fail repeatedly as mileage increases.

 

1. Camshaft Oil Control Valve (VVT Solenoid)

 

One of the most common failures on the M274 engine is the camshaft oil control valve, also known as the variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid.

 

Typical DTCs:

• P0010

• P0011

• P0013

• P0014

• P0016

• P0017

 

Common symptoms include:

• Check Engine Light

• Reduced engine performance

• Rough idle

• Hard starting

 

Before replacing the solenoid, inspect the electrical connector for oil contamination, verify wiring integrity, and ensure the engine oil is clean and maintained properly. In some cases, camshaft adjuster magnets or wiring issues are the actual cause.

2. Electronic Thermostat Failure

 

The electronically controlled thermostat is another well-known weak point of the M274 engine. Internal heater circuit failures or a thermostat stuck open are common.

• Engine taking too long to reach operating temperature

• Weak cabin heating

• Reduced fuel economy

• Cooling fan operating abnormally

 

If coolant temperature remains around 70 to 80°C during normal driving or drops unexpectedly, the thermostat should be inspected.

3. Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve Failure

 

The integrated PCV system can fail as the diaphragm deteriorates or the valve sticks.

• Rough idle

• Whistling noise from the engine

• Oil leaks

• Excessive crankcase vacuum

• Difficult-to-remove oil filler cap

 

Because PCV failures often create vacuum leaks, lean mixture faults frequently accompany the primary DTC.
