🔥 Engine Overheating Warning but No Fault Codes?

You connect a diagnostic scanner expecting to find a fault code, but nothing appears. Does that mean the vehicle is fine? Not necessarily.

In real-world diagnostics, it’s not uncommon for an engine overheating warning to appear without any stored DTCs. This usually means the ECU has not met the conditions required to store a fault code, not that the cooling system is working properly.

The first step is to check the live coolant temperature data. Verify whether the engine is actually overheating or if the coolant temperature sensor is providing incorrect readings.

Next, inspect the cooling fan operation. Make sure the fan runs correctly with the air conditioning on and that both low and high speeds operate as intended. A faulty cooling fan or fan control module can cause overheating without setting a diagnostic code.

Also check the coolant level and condition. Low coolant, trapped air in the cooling system, or internal and external leaks can all trigger intermittent overheating warnings.

A stuck thermostat is another common cause. If the thermostat fails to open, coolant cannot circulate properly through the radiator. In many cases, the upper radiator hose will be hot while the lower hose remains noticeably cooler.

Don’t overlook the water pump. A damaged impeller or a weak electric water pump may reduce coolant circulation, causing overheating only under certain driving conditions.

A faulty coolant temperature sensor can also trigger a warning even when the engine temperature is normal. Comparing the scanner data with an infrared thermometer is a quick way to verify sensor accuracy.

Finally, consider instrument cluster or CAN communication issues. Some vehicles display an overheating warning on the dashboard even though the ECU has not detected a fault, making a complete system diagnosis essential.

No fault codes do not always mean no problem. Accurate diagnosis comes from combining live data, physical inspection, and an understanding of how the cooling system operates.*
