Why Is the Burmester Subwoofer Amplifier in the Mercedes-Benz GLS So Prone to Water Damage?

One issue that appears more often than many owners expect is water damage to the Burmester subwoofer amplifier located in the trunk.

When the audio system suddenly stops working, produces distorted sound, or multiple electrical faults appear at the same time, this amplifier is worth checking before replacing other components.

The amplifier is mounted on the floor of the luggage compartment, making it one of the first electronic modules exposed if water enters the trunk. Because the housing is designed for heat dissipation rather than being completely sealed, prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to internal corrosion.

As shown in the photos, once moisture reaches the circuit board, corrosion quickly develops on the PCB, solder joints, and electronic components. At this stage, simply drying the module is rarely enough. In many cases, professional repair or replacement becomes necessary.

Common Causes of Water Intrusion

The amplifier itself is usually not the source of the problem. Water typically enters the vehicle through:

  • Worn trunk weather seals
  • Clogged sunroof drain tubes
  • Deteriorated tail lamp seals
  • Rear body repairs with improper sealing
  • Leaks around the trunk ventilation flaps

Over time, water collects at the lowest point of the trunk, where the amplifier is installed.

Preventive Maintenance Tips

✔ Inspect the trunk floor regularly, especially after heavy rain.

✔ Lift the trunk mat occasionally and check for moisture around the spare tire well.

✔ Keep sunroof drain tubes clean to prevent water overflow.

✔ If water is found in the trunk, repair the leak before replacing the amplifier. Otherwise, the new module may suffer the same fate.

Electronic modules are often damaged not by a brief splash of water, but by long-term exposure to moisture. Catching the problem early can sometimes allow the module to be cleaned and repaired before corrosion causes irreversible circuit damage.

A simple inspection of the trunk can help prevent an expensive audio system repair later on.*
