👻 Is There a Ghost in Your Parking Sensor?

After a collision repair or bumper repaint, have you noticed any of these symptoms?

✔️ Parking sensor warning appears immediately when Reverse is selected

✔️ The sensor was replaced, but the problem remains

In many cases, the issue isn’t the sensor itself.

It could be excessive paint on the parking sensor.

Parking Distance Control (PDC) sensors work by transmitting and receiving ultrasonic waves. They calculate the distance to nearby objects based on the time it takes for the sound waves to return.

If the sensor is coated with too much primer, base coat, or clear coat during a bumper repaint, the ultrasonic signal can become distorted. Even a perfectly good sensor may no longer operate correctly.

Common causes include:

✔️ Excessive paint thickness on the sensor

✔️ Heavy primer or body filler around the sensor opening

✔️ Improper repainting procedures

✔️ Incorrect sensor installation angle after repair

It’s also common to replace the sensor only to find that the fault remains because the real issue is the paint finish, not the electronics.

Before Replacing the Sensor, Check:

✔️ Paint thickness on the sensor surface

✔️ Sensor alignment and mounting angle

✔️ Sensor bracket condition inside the bumper

✔️ Wiring and connector integrity

✔️ Live data from each sensor using a diagnostic scan tool

Modern PDC systems are surprisingly sensitive. Before replacing expensive components, always check the vehicle’s repair and paint history.
